Tutoring

What is tutoring?
Tutoring, in my mind, is a supplemental teaching form. It's coming alongside a student and supplementing their curriculum or school experience. Practically speaking, students need to arrive here with a math book and a goal such as:
  • Understand indirect proofs
  • Review that stuff that was so confusing last year
  • Pass Friday's test
  • Figure out this homework
  • Learn how to read this book
  • Discover "Why" this stuff works
  • Make life easier next semester
Sometimes a student comes with a couple of goals, other times it's a one-time thing. If relevant, I'll send you, or your student, home with homework. I'd be glad to write up an end-of-year summary or letter of recommendation if needed.

What tutoring is not:
Tutoring isn't my being your child's primary math teacher. A couple hours with me won't take the place of regular classroom or at-home instruction. If you are expecting your child to be completely self-sufficient in mathematics, you're setting an unreasonable standard that a couple of hours with me won't fix. I can't hold your child accountable on a daily basis, be the "reason" they're behind schedule, or issue them a grade. (Please see the FAQ for more thoughts on self-teaching curricula.)

What I know:
I love math! I am certified by the state of New Hampshire to teach mathematics to both middle and high schoolers. While I enjoy all ages of students, and all levels of math, I'm most at home with older students and higher math. I currently have math-clients ranging from middle school to college. Keep in mind that math can be the sticking point in the higher sciences, so you might need a math tutor to help you with that Physics course. In addition to mathematics, I'm also reasonably skilled at basic physics, computer science, and writing.

How it works:
Give me a call, make an appointment, and then show up... it's (almost) that simple. Keep in mind that I'm a homeschool mom and a homemaker; my schedule is a little crazy. I try to be flexible, and do have tutoring blocks built into my schedule, but if I can't fit you in it's nothing personal... just the limitations of the 24 hour day. I recommend half-hour or one-hour blocks of time for school-aged students, and one to two-hour blocks of time for college students. Remember: Bring your book or curriculum with you! We're going to work with your materials to achieve your goals. Parents are expected to remain on site unless arrangements have been made. Payment details can be found here.
