A few Questions, and answers, about "the money thing":

Q: What if my husband is on disability?
Q: Do you offer a discount for large families?
Q: Why does your fee go up after July 31st?
Q: Do I need proof of income?
Q: Are you subsidized or something?!?
Q: What payment forms do you accept?
Q: What exactly does "barter" mean?
Q: I'm getting a lot of tutoring. Could I get a discount?
Q: What if I...?

Q: What if my husband is on disability?

A: I try to keep my sliding scale simple, but there's a sticky range between being unemployed and being under-employed. If the main breadwinner in your household is on long-term unemployment benefits due to disability, you probably fall somewhere in between tiers B an C. Just pick a number! If you're doing fine on Social Security, Insurance, and part-time jobs, then feel free to pay at the Tier B level... but if not, go with tier C. Most of my clients in this situation pay me something in between.

Q: Do you offer a discount for large families?

A: I don't offer multiple-child discounts. I love large families and want to encourage them in any way possible. However, I also feel for the one- or two-child family that struggles to justify Rosetta Stone due to its high "per-child" cost. I try to keep my per-evaluation cost down for all of my clients.

Q: Why does your fee go up after July 31st?

A: I value my freedom to homeschool in New Hampshire. Each year I spend countless hours fielding emails, calling Representatives, and "visiting" Concord. We currently have minimally intrusive homeschool laws... and yet have been classified as an HSLDA "Red State" due to our "hostile legislative climate". Realistically, every time a homeschooler ignores a simple deadline, required by law, we all look bad. Remember: you don't have to be "finished" school, you only need to show adequate progress over the last year! Life gets in the way, so I'm not going to nag you if you slide into July... and I'll still gladly do your evaluation in August or September. The higher rate is just my little incentive for you comply with New Hampshire's homeschool law.

Q: Do I need proof of income?

A: You do not need to bring your W2... I'll trust you!

Q: Are you subsidized or something?!?

A: Nope. I do this as a business and a service; call it a vocation. If your husband just got fired, I'd rather you buy a copy of Story of The World, or groceries, than pay me $25 for an evaluation!

Q: What payment forms do you accept?

A: Currently, in 2010, I accept both cash and checks. Make checks out to "Bethany Barnosky" and try to bring correct change because I rarely have any cash myself : ) I plan on accepting debit/credit cards through PayPal beginning in 2011.

Q: What exactly does "barter" mean?

A: Simply put, I've been known to trade an evaluation for a textbook or help with my car. For timed services, such as tutoring or transcript help, I just trade hours; I spend a few hours helping you set up a transcript and course descriptions and you spend a few hours teaching me how to bake. We can schedule bartering appointments or, at it's simplest form, I can tutor your student while you do yard work, clean my house, or stock my freezer. I love to trade what I love doing for what you love doing... Win Win!

Q: I'm getting a lot of tutoring... Could I get a discount?

A: Absolutely! If you pay for two hours of tutoring at a time, the price drops to $25 for those two hours, $20 with your ministerial or military discount. You just have to pay at one time, not neccessarily get tutored for two hours back-to-back.

Q: What if I...?

A: I know that life happens, but if you pay by check and it bounces I will need to charge a $20 returned check fee. This is to cover the bank fee(s) that my bank charges me when your check is rejected for insufficient funds. If you forget your wallet on evaluation day, it's not a crisis, I'll just send you home with a bill. However, please try not to forget your wallet : )
