Assessment Helps

Interested in standardized testing? I use the PASS Test, myself, but some people prefer the IOWA. Here's an example of their results page 1, and page 2.

When my daughter read at an early age I decided to forego a formal phonics program. It's easy to stress about the lack of a paper trail for your beginning reader, and hard to keep up a reading list for your pre-writer. Instead of the worry, consider administering a quick Reading Assessment each year. It's a quick and easy way to show your child's progress. The National Right to Read Foundation has an online Reading Competency Test, as does A to Z Home's Cool Homeschooling. Hoagies has an entire page dedicated to various reading levels; Timetabler has one on determining the reading level of any given book.

A truly excellent "one stop" evaluation book is Evaluating for Excellence by Theresa Moon of Communicators for Christ. She also did an amazing workshop at Mass HOPE this year.

For a wide variety of grading rubrics to help you evaluate your students work, there is an excellent selection at Rubrics for Teachers.

If you're at a loss when it comes to grading your high schooler's lab reports, consider grading rubrics from LabWrite or The Tuckahoe Common School District.

Essay writing is the most essential writing skill that your homeschool student will learn during his school career. Parents are often concerned because they don't know how to grade these essays, or what they should respect from their students. A solid English curriculum will include grading rubrics to guide you through the evaluation of their specific assignments. Other essay rubrics can be found at The Social Studies Help Center, The University of Wisconsin, The Community College of Denver, and About.com.

If you have a useful assessment link, I'd love to include it here!
